My Story
Howdy!
My name is Wesley Tarr
I am a 3D Artist, Prop Designer, 3D Printing Nerd, Graphic Designer, Christian, Cosplayer, Hardcore Gamer, and VR Early Adopter. I am passionate about the digital arts and desire to bring the virtual world to the real one.
Ever since I was a kid I wanted the superpower to reach into any screen and pull out what I saw into reality. When I was in elementary school, I asked my mom, who had a degree in fashion design, to make me specific costumes for Halloween each year. By the time I was out of high school, the costumes became so elaborate so high quality that my she started a one person business selling costume pieces on an online store. CostumeBiz is the name of the business.
After High SchooI, I started asking mom to make costumes from my favorite videogames. She started making sales for our Dovahkiin Armor set. Money was being made from creating costumes from an art medium she does not engage in. I was the one playing the videogames not her. At first, she made the costumes and I did the "research" on what would bring in the sales.
I have grown up playing videogames as my one and only hobby. The parents thought buying me and my siblings Gameboy Colors would merely act as an "electronic babysitter" when they were away. I still cherish videogames to this day; it is a deep part of who I am. Parents though need to monitor there kids and make sure they become virtuous adults; so, my parents wanted me to: 1 obey the rules of the house, 2 do good in school, 3 behave myself, and 4 do my chores. I wanted to play videogames as long as I want with no one having a problem; so, those four unofficial and unspoken rules were followed down to the letter. I was a goody goody two shoes kid growing up; am I a goody goody two shoes as an adult? I certainly hope I am. Especially with the Christian values I picked up over the years of studying the Bible. The Golden Rule is a valuable personal code of conduct that I will follow to the rest of my days.
My Education. Platt College of San Diego.
Platt College is an accelerated learning vocational school. I transferred my credits from four years at Grossmont Community College knocking out all my prerequisites at Platt and cutting my time at Platt College of San Diego to two and a quarter years.
I entered Platt College of San Diego with the goal to enter the gaming industry. They started me out with learning Graphic Design; I did well taking home an Associate's Degree with a 3.85 GPA; but when I took the introductory 3d course I was hooked and went on to the 3D Bachelor's Degree program. I excelled in the program; taking on ambitious projects and spending countless hours after class to finish them in time. Graduated with a Bachelor's Degree, 4.0, with Honors.
For the final project I created a model of Eredin Breacc Glas from the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I made the model with the intent to 3d print it into cosplay after I graduated. That summer I debuted my cosplay at San Diego Comic-Con. I went on to compete in costume competitions across Southern California winning thousands of dollars in prizes.
My victory at Wondercon's Masquerade in 2019... it changed my career path. I had won Best Technical Costume Construction from Motion Pictures Costumes IASTE 705 and had a chat with their president. He praised me for my work telling me I have potential as a costume/prop designer. Told me to get my portfolio together and aim to enter the costume industry using my 3d modeling and printing skills. That encounter focused me. No more was the desire to enter the gaming industry. Now my career path will end in the costume/prop making industry.

CostumeBiz, the Tarr family business
During my time at Grossmont College, I was working for The 99 Cents Only Store. After 10 months of working as a Stocker I decided to move on to work solely for my mom's business, immersing myself into the craft. Sewing leather, fabric, and fur, mold making and casting polyurethane plastic armor pieces, foam smithing, painting, antiquing, and clear coating armor plates and swords, and rigging lights in face masks.
On our fourth year, as I was attending Platt College of San Diego, we took up 3d printing with all of it's complexities and many many problems. This allowed me to make armor, weapons, and accessories for our projects. My mom was the one who sculpted pieces out of clay initially; but now she relies on me to 3d model everything that cannot be sewn.
For years we have made award winning costumes from videogames such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We have sold hundreds of quality pieces on our Etsy store ShopCostumeBiz.
